What is Hypnosis?

It is all about suggestion

Yes, it really is that simple. Hypnosis is being in a state of suggestibility, achieved through deep relaxation or occupying one’s consciousness. This allows the subconscious mind to receive information that aids in the desired result, such as changing bad habits to better ones, stress or pain management, regaining self-control, or remembering something important.

Imagine the brain as a business. The conscious mind is a micro-manager, who, right or wrong, calls the shots. The subconscious mind consist of all the employees. They are responsible for their jobs and making the company function, but they must follow what the micro-manager says. Hypnosis permits this manager to go on a coffee break or creates a task that allows for information to get through to the workers so that they function better.

Hypnosis is a state of being in focused awareness

The hypnosis process allows people to access parts of their mind that is not available to them in normal states of consciousness. Though we have described hypnosis as a coffee break from consciousness, there is always a certain amount of awareness that remains for the person experiencing the hypnosis.

A hypnotist does not ever control you. You are in control at all times. It is your willingness to participate in the process that allows you to accept a hypnotic suggestion from a hypnotist.

Dispelling the myths
There are many misconceptions about hypnosis. Here is the reality:

  • You cannot get stuck in hypnosis
  • You are aware of all that transpires
  • You will only allow suggestions that are in your nature and those in which you agree
  • Anyone can be hypnotized if they want to be hypnotized(*the exception is in children under five and those with severe mental disabilities)
